The Winery

On your way to the Village of McGregor you will pass the lovely McGregor Winery on the left hand side. The winery imposes a unique charm of tranquillity, history and presentness.

All these are based on a proud Scottish heritage. The winery was established in 1948 with the intention of producing exceptional quality wines and building long term relationships with stakeholders. The McGregor tartan is a well known brand in South-Africa and although it is not found on every supermarket shelf, it has a very loyal customer base.

Grapes are produced in three river valleys with different terroirs contributing to the unique wine styles. It varies from a drier Karoo like climate to high mountainous regions with low temperatures and vineyards growing between the fynbos and proteas.

The red Karoo soil on the koppies is ideal for noble cultivars, especially red wine grapes.  Closer to the river, the soil tends to be deep sandy Alluvial soils which are more suitable for Chenin Blanc and Colombard. Ascending the Riviersonderend mountains the soil changes and due to the higher altitude it gets much cooler.  This is an ideal area for Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinotage cultivars. The different terriors certainly influence the flavours of the individual cultivars.  These unique flavour profiles are then separately fermented in the cellar. For example the Sauvignon Blanc from the lower altitude vineyards will be more tropical whereas the cooler climate will be more typical grass, green pepper and asparagus flavours. Due to limited irrigation water, only limited additional irrigation are implemented.  The result is a small crop of highly concentrated flavours in the berries.
The winery stays up to date with new technology and capacity to ensure that wines of good quality can be produced at the facility. It has a total tank capacity of about 13.4 million litres and a production capacity of about 9 million litres of wine from 12 000 tons of grapes.

The Winery is owned by 33 producing members. White wines contribute to about 80% of production. The biggest white cultivars being Chenin blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Colombar. Red wines consist of Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Ruby Cabernet and Cabernet Sauvignon.
